01

DAY 1: HANOI MOTORBIKE TOUR TO TA XUA

Distance: Approximately 210–230 km
Riding Time: 6–7 hours depending on road and trail conditions
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Local hotel or mountain guesthouse in Ta Xua

Your adventure begins in the early morning as we leave behind the busy rhythm of Hanoi and ride westward into the open countryside. The first stage is a gentle warm-up, passing through small towns, farming villages and green rice fields where daily life still moves at a calm, traditional pace. As the city noise fades away, the road begins to open into a more exciting landscape of tea hills, limestone mountains and winding valleys.

HANOI MOTORBIKE TOUR TO TA XUA

After a local lunch on the way, the ride becomes more thrilling as we approach the mountainous area of Son La province. This is where the real spirit of a Northwest Vietnam offroad motorcycle tour starts to unfold. The smooth roads gradually turn into sharper curves, twisted mountain sections and steep passes that demand focus, balance and confidence. Depending on weather and rider ability, we may explore a mix of backroads, dirt tracks and single trails cutting through remote villages and forested hillsides. In the rainy season, some parts can become muddy roads, adding even more challenge and excitement to the adventure ride.

Ta Xua is famous among Vietnamese travelers for its dramatic “sea of clouds,” but for motorbike riders, the journey itself is just as powerful as the destination. The road climbs higher and higher, revealing deep valleys below and layers of mountains fading into the mist. Along the way, we may pass Hmong villages where wooden houses cling to the slopes, children wave from the roadside, and local people continue their daily work on steep terraced fields. It is a landscape shaped not only by nature, but also by generations of mountain communities living in harmony with the highlands.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Ta Xua, a peaceful mountain village sitting above the clouds. If the weather is kind, the sunset over the ridgelines is unforgettable. Tonight, we settle into a simple local guesthouse or hotel, enjoy a hearty mountain dinner and share stories from the first day’s EPIC RIDE. The air is cool, the night is quiet, and the mountains feel beautifully close.

02

DAY 2: TA XUA MOTORBIKE TOUR TO MAI CHAU VALLEY

Distance: Approximately 180–220 km
Riding Time: 6–7 hours depending on trail conditions
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Traditional Thai stilt-house homestay or comfortable lodge in Mai Chau

Wake up early in Ta Xua and step outside to one of the most magical scenes in Northern Vietnam. On clear mornings, the valley below is often covered by a soft white ocean of clouds, while the mountain peaks rise like islands in the sky. This is the famous Ta Xua cloud-hunting experience, and it is one of the reasons riders love this route so much. Before leaving, we may ride up to one of the nearby viewpoints, where the road follows narrow ridgelines with dramatic drops, sharp curves and breathtaking panoramas.

northwest-vietnam-motorbike-adventure-from-hanoi-to-ta-xua-mai-chau
Conquering the Ta Xua Peak

After breakfast, we begin another powerful day of mountain riding. The route from Ta Xua to Mai Chau is full of contrast: highland mist, jungle-covered slopes, remote ethnic villages, river valleys and hidden backroads rarely visited by normal tourists. Depending on weather and local conditions, the guide may choose a more adventurous line with dirt tracks, wild tracks and rough mountain sections, or a smoother scenic route for a more relaxed ride. Either way, the day is made for riders who enjoy real movement through landscape, not just sightseeing from a distance.

We ride through areas where the culture of the Hmong and Thai communities can still be felt strongly in daily life. Small markets, hillside corn fields, wooden homes, buffalo trails and roadside tea stops give the journey a human warmth. These are not staged attractions; they are living places, where the rhythm of the mountains remains deeply connected to farming, family and seasonal change. At times, the trail may run through patches of jungle, narrow village lanes or steep passes where every bend reveals a new view. This is where the words adventure ride truly come alive.

northwest-vietnam-motorbike-adventure-from-hanoi-to-ta-xua-mai-chau
TA XUA MOTORBIKE TOUR TO MAI CHAU VALLEY

By the afternoon, the scenery begins to soften as we descend toward Mai Chau Valley. The rugged mountains gradually open into a wide, peaceful basin surrounded by green limestone cliffs. Mai Chau is home to the White Thai people, known for their traditional stilt houses, brocade weaving, folk dances and warm hospitality. Compared with the wild energy of Ta Xua, Mai Chau feels gentle, open and welcoming.

We arrive in the valley in the late afternoon. After checking into a local homestay or lodge, there may be time for a short walk around Lac or Pom Coong village, where bamboo houses stand beside rice fields and the sound of village life fills the evening air. Dinner is served with local dishes, and for many travelers, this quiet night in Mai Chau becomes one of the most memorable cultural moments of the whole tour.

03

DAY 3: MAI CHAU MOTORBIKE TOUR BACK TO HANOI

Distance: Approximately 160–180 km
Riding Time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: Not included / Tour ends in Hanoi

Mai Chau Valley

The final morning begins gently in Mai Chau Valley. After two days of steep passes, wild tracks and high mountain roads, this peaceful valley offers a beautiful moment to slow down and absorb the cultural side of Northern Vietnam. The morning light often falls softly over the rice fields, while smoke rises from village kitchens and farmers begin their day. Before riding back to Hanoi, we may take a short cruise through the village lanes, passing traditional stilt houses, small gardens and weaving workshops where White Thai women still preserve their craft through colorful brocade patterns.

Leaving Mai Chau, the ride quickly becomes scenic again. The road climbs toward Thung Khe Pass, one of the well-known mountain passes in Hoa Binh province. From the top, the view opens over limestone peaks, deep valleys and winding roads carved into the mountainside. This section is a pleasure for motorbike riders, with flowing bends, sharp curves and twisted roads that allow you to enjoy the rhythm of the bike while staying alert to local traffic and changing mountain conditions.

Depending on the chosen route, we may ride through Ba Khan or along sections near the Da River reservoir, one of the most beautiful hidden landscapes between Mai Chau and Hanoi. This area is sometimes called a “small Ha Long Bay on land,” with calm blue water surrounded by green mountains and quiet villages. It is a wonderful contrast to the rugged dirt tracks of Ta Xua, showing how diverse a short Northwest Vietnam motorcycle tour can be.

The ride gradually descends from the mountains into the midland countryside. We pass small markets, roadside cafés, sugarcane fields and rural villages before joining the busier roads leading back to Hanoi. After lunch on the way, the final stretch brings us closer to the capital, where the traffic becomes more active and the pace of modern Vietnam returns.

MAI CHAU MOTORBIKE TOUR BACK TO HANOI

By late afternoon, we arrive back in Hanoi and conclude the tour. Though only three days long, this journey captures the essence of a real Northern Vietnam motorbike adventure: highland clouds, steep passes, winding roads, ethnic villages, muddy roads, jungle trails, warm local encounters and the freedom of riding through landscapes that still feel wild, honest and deeply alive.

End of the trip!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this tour suitable for beginners?

This tour is best suited for riders with previous motorbike experience. The route includes mountain passes, sharp curves, steep sections, dirt tracks and possible muddy roads, especially after rain. Confident beginners may join if they are comfortable riding manual motorcycles, but intermediate riders will enjoy the tour much more.

2. What type of motorbike is recommended?

Honda XR150 is a practical and reliable option for mixed roads, while Honda CRF250L or CRF300L is highly recommended for riders who want a stronger offroad motorcycle tour experience. The final bike choice depends on rider height, skill level and comfort.

3. How difficult is the off-road riding?

The difficulty can be adjusted. Some sections may include single trails, rough village roads, muddy roads, jungle tracks and steep climbs, but the guide can choose alternative routes if the weather is too challenging or if riders prefer a softer adventure ride.

4. What is the best season for this tour?

The best time is from September to May. From November to March, the weather is cooler and Ta Xua has a better chance of cloud hunting. Summer months can be lush and beautiful, but rain may create more muddy roads and slippery trails.

5. Can we see the cloud sea in Ta Xua?

Ta Xua is one of Vietnam’s most famous cloud-hunting destinations, but the cloud sea depends on weather, temperature and wind conditions. The best chance is usually early morning during the cooler months. Even without clouds, the mountain scenery is still spectacular.

6. What kind of accommodation is used?

Accommodation is simple but comfortable. In Ta Xua, guests normally stay in a local hotel or mountain guesthouse. In Mai Chau, accommodation may be a traditional Thai stilt-house homestay or a comfortable lodge depending on the selected service level.

7. Is this tour possible with a pillion passenger?

Yes, it can be arranged, but the route may need to be softened. For safety and comfort, pillion passengers are better suited to scenic backroads and mountain roads rather than technical off-road sections or muddy single trails.

8. What should riders bring?

Riders should bring protective riding gear, lightweight clothes, rain jacket, gloves, sunglasses, personal medicine, sunscreen and a small day bag. In winter, warm layers are important because Ta Xua can be cold in the morning and evening.

9. Are meals included?

Yes, meals during the riding days are usually included as mentioned in the program. Food is local Vietnamese cuisine, with simple mountain dishes in remote areas and more variety in Mai Chau. Special dietary requests should be advised in advance.

10. Can the route be customized?

Yes. The route can be adjusted based on riding skill, weather, travel season and personal interests. The guide may add more dirt tracks and wild trails for experienced riders, or choose smoother scenic roads for a more relaxed journey.

11. Is this a private or group tour?

This tour can be operated as a private motorcycle tour or as a small group adventure. A private tour allows more flexibility in pace, photo stops and trail selection.

12. Why choose this 3-day motorbike tour?

This is a perfect short escape for riders who want a real taste of Northern Vietnam without taking a long holiday. In just three days, it combines adventure riding, off-road tracks, cloud hunting, ethnic culture, mountain scenery and the peaceful charm of Mai Chau Valley.

Awesome Riding Adventure 5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful. The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Unforgettable 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon We highly recommend the 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon. The organization was excellent from start to finish. The day before, we were personally briefed by the company owner, received all important details and felt well prepared. Our guide Cong was just awesome. We felt safe at all times and were allowed to experience small cultural excursions practically every day. He showed us beautiful places, introduced us to local culture and was able to tell us an incredible amount about the country. We were also spoiled culinary – we ate very fine every day.An absolutely unique experience, perfectly organized and with a guide who made our experience unforgettable. Clear recommendation!

Great bike tour for 6 days, north west Vietnam Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. Homesteads were great, food nothing to say as always the best. Get it booked and take your holiday to +10.
