The 8-day trip will ride over 1.200 km, through 4 provinces in Northwest Laos, following a dirt trail along the Laos border with Thailand, Myanmar and China. We follow the old drug trafficking trails to discover this unique area. Discover the infamous Golden Triangle, a remote area covering parts of Shan State in Myanmar and smaller, adjacent areas of Laos and Thailand. This is one of the most exciting rides in Laos. It is a sensational trip requiring a high level of riding skill, a free spirit and a sense of adventure. It is muddy, slippery, rocky and wild and will leave you tired but exhilarated.

DAY 1: Northern Laos Offroad Motorbike Tour : Luang Prabang Motorcycle Tours to Xieng Hone. 180 km

Topic: High mountains ridges ride for the first 130 kms
Description: Head west on route No 1A on the muddy and bumpy dirt road then we take a ferry across the Mekong River to Sayabury Province where we will have lunch in the provincial capital. We will then need all our off-road riding skills to explore the Laotian jungle wilderness, along 95 km of some of the most challenging roads in northern Laos.

The ride to Hongsa has a very rugged landscape with forested mountains, and it is known for the production of rice, cotton, peanuts, sesame, maize and oranges. Teak forests cover large parts of the province and have Elephant festival during February.

DAY 2: Xieng Hone Motorcycle Tours to Houai Say. 180 km

Topic: Dirt ride around White Elephant Valley
Description: Pray to God that it doesn’t rain so that we eat dust today instead of mud for the 93 km ride along the Thai border to the Mekong River. There we take a boat and enjoy our trip up to Houay Say. You may be the only people around and if you are lucky you will meet local Mahout and see elephants.

Arrive at Houay Say in the late afternoon, the beautiful border crossing town located on the Laos side of the Mekong River.

DAY 3: Houai Say Motorbike Tours to Golden Triangle – Muong Meung. 170 km

Topic: Golden triangle immersion
Description: Get ready to head up the Mekong to the famous Golden Triangle. This region once grew thousands of acres of opium poppies. See the small and quiet villages of Akha and Yao ethnic minorities.

Our ride will pass by Sop Roak – village of the Akha people on the Thai Mekong River bank. The end of the trail we will take the single track along Mekong river to Muang Meung.
Night: Local Guest-house in the center of the village.

DAY 4: Muong Meung Motorcycle Tours to Nam Ha National Park – Luang Namtha. 150 km

Topic: Nam Ha National Park ride
Description: It is hard to say farewell to this part of riding along Mekong. Wake up early if you do not want to miss sunrise on the river. Enjoy this part until we head Xieng Kok. On this peaceful stretch of road, the biggest hazards you are likely to see on the road are the cows and chickens who roam freely around the area!

We will drive through beautiful rain forest to Luang Namtha. Along the way we will have a chance to visit local hill-tribe villages of Akha, Hmong, Tai Dam, Lu people. Our lunch will be prepare for road-stop with some local traditional stuffs: sticky rice & dried beef.

DAY 5: Luang Nam Tha – Rest day (massage, visit around, relaxing)

Today, you’ll be at leisure to refresh yourself after a quite long tough trip
Overnight at hotel in Luang Nam Tha.

DAY 6: Luang Nam Tha Motorcycle Tours to Na Mor – Boun Tai. 130 km

Description: A long and exceptional riding day through a wide variety of road surfaces, none of it smooth, and we will pass only a couple of vehicles per hour at the most. The bad road conditions are not terribly difficult, but it will force us to keep our speed down to avoid frame-bending holes. This road was built by the Chinese government in the ’60s and has barely been maintained since then. Much of the day we ride through primary forest-clad mountains and we will pass several extremely primitive hilltribe villages where women still roam around topless.

In the town of Boun Tai we will explore the remnants of an old French Legionnaire fort in a state of total disrepair.

DAY 7: Boun Tai Motorcycle Tours to Muang Khoua – Nong Khiaw. 110 km + 4h boat trip

Topic: 4 hours boat cruise downstream to Nong Khiaw
Description: That is interesting to see market in the morning in Boun Tai. There are of goods coming up to local trading square in town center. Today is easy day, as we have 70 km on bumpy road…only. We will ride through many Lao Thung villages – home of mid-land ethnic groups. Take a rare good paved road from intersection to Muang Khoua where we enter our long-tail boat.
On our 4 hours boat cruise downstream to Nong Khiaw, we see great landscapes and river sceneries and explore the natural way of life along the river banks. Most of rivers in Laos are just…rough and sitting in boat makes same feeling with riding on winding road.

DAY 8: Nong Khiaw Motorcycle Tours to Pak Xeng – Luang Prabang. 230 km

Topic: Hmong trail discovery ride
Description: The last day requires a good physical condition, but in exchange for afabulous day following a long way in the middle of mountains.

Looking forward meets two different hilltribe, Khamu and Hmong people. The Khamu live in mid-mountain while the Hmong live in isolated mountain really far from the world that we know. The entire day will be almost 230 km of which 130 km are to slalom between mid-mountain and high mountain villages on the ridges. The finish line is finally the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang where a well deserved beer Lao will wait for us in town!
A Tuk-Tuk will send you back to your hotel.

“This trip has been studied to mix up motorbiking with Lao culture, waterfalls, elephant interactions & more. Accommodations will range from simple guest-houses & good wooden bungalows to nice hotels. All tours are created and organized at their most qualitative levels but personalization is of course possible such as changing hotel standards or modifying the activity list.

5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful.The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. We did a 10 day tour. Lihn was our guide. Great guy. We had a Canadian guy join us, so 4 in total. Amazing time, 10 days few by. I had a gopro on my helmet facing forward, Lihn had one facing back. Completed the 10 Day trip. It was guided and tailored to our riding abilities. Sadly we came at a time with flooding and could not complete some tracks because of this. The food was amazing at every location. Homestays were fantastic, nice people. Ducky had good knowledge about the locations and good recommendations
