Tour Overview & Highlights
4 DAYS EXPEDITION
Forget the well-travelled version of the Thakhek Loop. This four-day dirt bike adventure takes you beyond the easy asphalt and into the wilder side of Central Laos, where limestone mountains rise above rice fields, jungle trails disappear between remote villages, and weathered tracks lead through the haunting landscapes of the Nakai Plateau. Ride from the Mekong town of Thakhek to spectacular caves, turquoise springs and Thalang's famous flooded forest before continuing toward legendary Kong Lor Cave. From there, the journey gets even more adventurous as we explore remote backroads and dirt tracks toward Lak Sao beneath the Annamite Mountains. Expect winding mountain roads, broken gravel, red-earth trails, occasional mud, river crossings and wonderfully quiet Lao villages. It is not simply a motorcycle tour—it is four days of riding through one of Laos' most extraordinary karst landscapes, where the journey itself becomes the destination.
Product positioning note: this itinerary is designed as a guided off-road variation of the classic Thakhek Loop. Daily distances and off-road percentages should therefore be treated as approximate and adjusted according to weather, trail access, seasonal water levels and rider ability.

ROUTE
01
DAY 1: THAKHEK – THAM NANG AEN CAVE – COOL SPRINGS – THALANG
Terrain: Paved rural roads, gravel roads, red-dirt tracks and optional village trails
Estimated off-road: Approx. 30–40%, depending on weather and trail conditions
Difficulty: Moderate
Our adventure begins beside the Mekong in Thakhek, an atmospheric provincial town where old French-era architecture still lingers behind tree-lined streets and sleepy shophouses. Within minutes of leaving town, however, the landscape changes dramatically. Flat farmland gives way to enormous limestone walls—the beginning of Khammouane’s celebrated karst country.
We follow Route 12 into what riders often call “Cave Alley,” a spectacular corridor of limestone formations riddled with caves and underground waterways. One of today’s major stops is Tham Nang Aen Cave, among the best-known caves near Thakhek. Hidden inside a huge limestone massif, the cave opens into impressive chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and surreal rock formations. The cool underground air makes a welcome escape from the tropical heat before we return to the bikes.
Then the character of the ride begins to change. Leaving the more travelled road behind, we search out smaller country lanes and dirt tracks threading between rice paddies, limestone cliffs and tiny farming settlements. Depending on the season, these sections can range from fast hard-packed earth to loose gravel and occasional muddy roads where standing on the pegs becomes part of the fun.
Around midday we stop at one of the area’s refreshing cool springs or natural pools, where clear water emerges from the limestone landscape. Boots come off, riding jerseys dry in the sun and there is time for a swim before the next section of our adventure ride.
The afternoon brings us toward the Nakai Plateau, climbing gradually through sharper curves and increasingly forested terrain. Here the atmosphere feels distinctly more remote. Traffic thins, villages become smaller and mountains close in around the road.
By late afternoon we roll into Thalang, a quiet settlement overlooking the extraordinary Nam Theun 2 reservoir landscape. Dead tree trunks rise eerily from the water around the plateau—our first glimpse of the famous flooded forest that will dominate tomorrow’s ride.
Engines off. Cold drink in hand. Sunset over the drowned forest. The adventure has properly begun.
Estimated off-road: Approx. 40–55% on the guided adventure variation
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
We wake to one of the strangest landscapes on the entire journey. Around Thalang and the Nakai Plateau, hundreds of pale, skeletal tree trunks rise from the waters of the Nam Theun 2 reservoir. The flooded forest is beautiful, but also slightly haunting—a reminder of how dramatically the landscape changed following the development of the hydroelectric reservoir. Rather than simply riding past it, we take time to explore quiet side tracks overlooking stretches of water where drowned forest seems to disappear toward the mountains.
This is where today’s EPIC RIDE begins. The road twists across the plateau before our guide searches out secondary tracks through forest and rural countryside. Some sections are fast gravel; others narrow into rougher wild tracks, red-earth trails and broken village roads. After rain, innocent-looking sections can quickly become slippery muddy roads, while the dry months usually offer firmer but dustier riding.
There is little need to rush here. Water buffalo wander across the road. Chickens scatter from village lanes. Children wave as the unfamiliar sound of dirt bikes approaches. Small wooden houses stand on stilts beside vegetable gardens and rice fields. This is the Laos that riders rarely see when travelling quickly between major towns.
As we descend from the plateau, the mountains change again. Huge limestone formations begin enclosing the road, producing a succession of sharp curves, twisting roads and dramatic karst corridors. Depending on time and the selected trail, we may pause near distinctive roadside rock formations or local viewpoints before continuing west.
Eventually the landscape opens into the magnificent valley leading toward Kong Lor Village. Towering limestone walls surround rice paddies like a natural fortress. The final approach is comparatively gentle and incredibly scenic, allowing us to ease off the throttle and absorb the surroundings after a demanding day.
If arrival time permits, we can stroll around the village or down toward the cave area; otherwise the full underground experience can be scheduled for the following morning.
Dinner tonight is simple Lao country cooking—perhaps grilled meat or river fish, fresh vegetables, laap, sticky rice and a cold Beerlao. There are few bright lights here. Instead, there are mountains silhouetted against the evening sky and the quiet satisfaction of knowing we reached Kong Lor the long way—the way dirt-bike riders remember.
Today’s highlights: Thalang • Nakai Plateau • Nam Theun 2 flooded forest • jungle roads • remote villages • mountain tracks • karst valleys • Kong Lor Village
Kong Lor Cave
03
DAY 3: KONG LOR CAVE – REMOTE VILLAGES – JUNGLE & DIRT TRAILS – LAK SAO
Distance: Approx. 140–165 km, depending on trail selection
Riding time: Approx. 6–7 hours plus Kong Lor Cave exploration
Terrain: Village backroads, gravel, hard-packed dirt, jungle tracks, creek crossings and technical seasonal sections
Estimated off-road: Approx. 50–65% on suitable trails
Difficulty: Challenging – best suited to riders with previous dirt-bike experience
There are places worth visiting because they are beautiful, and others because simply reaching them feels like an adventure. Kong Lor Cave manages to be both.
Before getting back onto our bikes, we explore one of Laos’ most extraordinary natural landmarks: a vast river cave running approximately 7.5 kilometres through a limestone mountain. Small motorised longboats carry us into the darkness, where the daylight quickly disappears and the sound of the engine echoes through enormous chambers. In illuminated sections we step ashore to walk among stalagmites and stalactites before continuing deeper underground.
Emerging again into daylight feels almost unreal. Then we swap the boat for dirt bikes.
Rather than simply following the easiest road toward Lak Sao, today’s guided route explores a network of rural tracks and small village roads, selected according to weather and local conditions. This is the most adventurous riding day of the tour.
The trail may narrow between bamboo forest and upland farms, cross small streams or climb rough sections where loose rock demands smooth throttle control. There can be single trails, rutted dirt tracks, steep climbs and muddy sections, particularly during or shortly after the wet season.
But technical riding is only part of today’s story. We stop in villages that receive relatively few foreign visitors. Wooden houses sit on stilts above the ground, families dry rice or cassava beside the road, and looms may still be used beneath houses for traditional weaving. These are not staged tourist villages; they are living communities, so our approach is deliberately respectful—slow riding, permission before photographs and time to interact rather than merely pass through.
Lunch may be simple: noodle soup, grilled chicken, sticky rice and whatever is available locally.
Eventually the trails begin climbing again toward the Annamite Range, the mountainous spine separating Laos from Vietnam. Cooler air, forest-covered slopes and increasingly winding roads signal our approach to Lak Sao, a small but important crossroads town near the eastern mountains.
We arrive dusty, possibly muddy, and almost certainly smiling. This is the day that transforms the trip from a scenic motorcycle loop into a genuine Laos off-road motorcycle adventure.
Today’s highlights: Kong Lor Cave • underground river journey • remote Lao villages • jungle trails • river crossings • dirt tracks • Annamite Mountains • Lak Sao
Estimated off-road: Approx. 25–40%, depending on route and conditions
Difficulty: Moderate
Our final morning begins beneath the forested mountains around Lak Sao. There is still plenty of riding ahead, but after yesterday’s technical trails, today has a different rhythm. It is a chance to enjoy the bike, the landscape and those beautifully twisted mountain roads that make Central Laos such an addictive place to ride.
We leave town after breakfast and begin working our way south through the mountains. Depending on weather and rider ability, our guide can keep sections on reliable roads or turn onto gravel and dirt alternatives cutting through small agricultural settlements.
There are sharp curves, sweeping bends and occasional steep passes, yet almost no pressure to ride fast. The pleasure comes from finding a rhythm—brake, lean, throttle, straighten—then looking up to discover another wall of jungle-covered limestone in front of us.
Small roadside villages offer natural breaks. We may stop for Lao coffee, fresh fruit or a bowl of noodles while motorcycles cool beneath the shade. These spontaneous pauses are part of what makes travelling by motorcycle in Laos so rewarding. The bike removes the barrier between traveller and landscape; there is no bus window, no air-conditioned bubble and no carefully choreographed tourist experience.
As we descend toward lower Khammouane, the roads become warmer and the landscape gradually opens. Limestone formations continue appearing beside rice fields, reminding us of the geological world we have been riding through for the last four days.
Where conditions allow, one last series of dirt tracks and rural backroads gives us a final taste of off-road Laos before reconnecting with the road toward Thakhek.
Then, almost unexpectedly, the Mekong appears again. We roll back into Thakhek, dusty motorcycles carrying four days’ worth of red earth and memories. The loop closes where it began, but after caves, drowned forests, wild trails, remote villages and mountain passes, the town feels different somehow.
Park the bikes. Remove the helmet. A cold Beerlao beside the Mekong seems entirely appropriate. Because an EPIC RIDE should always have a proper ending.
The tour is rated moderate to challenging. Riders should already be comfortable controlling a manual motorcycle on gravel, broken roads and dirt tracks. Some sections may include mud, ruts, loose stones or shallow stream crossings, depending on the season.
Is this the same as the classic Thakhek Loop?
No. The classic Thakhek Loop mainly follows established roads around Khammouane. Our itinerary is a guided dirt-bike variation, using selected village roads, backcountry tracks and off-road sections to create a more adventurous experience.
How much of the tour is off-road?
It varies considerably. On suitable days, approximately 40–60% of the riding may be off-road, while other days contain more paved mountain riding. Trail conditions can change quickly with rainfall, construction and local access.
What motorcycles are suitable for the tour?
Lightweight dual-sport motorcycles such as the Honda CRF250L or similar are ideal because they provide enough power for the road while remaining manageable on narrow dirt trails, loose surfaces and muddy terrain.
Do I need previous off-road riding experience?
Yes, some previous dirt or gravel riding experience is highly recommended. You do not need to be an enduro racer, but you should feel comfortable riding a manual motorcycle away from smooth asphalt.
What happens if the trails become too muddy?
Our local guide continuously assesses conditions. If heavy rain makes a trail unsafe or damages local access roads, we switch to an alternative route. Safety always takes priority over completing a specific off-road section.
What is so special about Kong Lor Cave?
Kong Lor is a spectacular river cave extending roughly 7.5 km through a massive limestone mountain. Travellers cross much of it by narrow motorised boat in almost complete darkness, making it one of the signature experiences of the Thakhek region.
When is the best time to ride the Thakhek Loop?
Generally, October through April provides the most predictable riding conditions. During wetter months, landscapes become intensely green but dirt tracks can become significantly more technical.
Will we visit local villages?
Yes. Remote village encounters are an important part of the tour, but we treat communities as living places rather than attractions. Riders are expected to slow down, avoid unnecessary noise and ask permission before photographing residents.
Is accommodation luxurious?
No. Accommodation along the remote sections is generally simple guesthouse or lodge style. Private rooms are used whenever available, but travellers should expect basic facilities in exchange for access to some wonderfully remote areas.
Can beginners join the tour?
Complete beginners should choose a softer road-oriented Laos motorcycle itinerary first. This trip is much more enjoyable when riders already understand clutch control, braking on loose surfaces and basic off-road body positioning.
Is Kong Lor Cave included on the same day as the dirt-bike route?
It can be. Operationally, however, we keep the schedule flexible because the cave excursion itself takes considerable time. An early start from Kong Lor is strongly recommended before beginning the day’s longer off-road ride.
Do we ride if it rains?
Light rain normally does not stop the tour, but heavy rainfall can make clay tracks extremely slippery or cause streams to rise. Routes are adjusted by the guide when necessary.
Is this tour suitable for large adventure bikes?
Not as the default product. If the tour includes single trails, muddy roads and jungle tracks, lightweight dual-sport motorcycles are far more suitable. A big-bike version should be designed separately with a higher asphalt and gravel-road ratio.

Awesome Riding Adventure
5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful. The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Unforgettable 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon
We highly recommend the 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon. The organization was excellent from start to finish. The day before, we were personally briefed by the company owner, received all important details and felt well prepared. Our guide Cong was just awesome. We felt safe at all times and were allowed to experience small cultural excursions practically every day. He showed us beautiful places, introduced us to local culture and was able to tell us an incredible amount about the country. We were also spoiled culinary – we ate very fine every day.An absolutely unique experience, perfectly organized and with a guide who made our experience unforgettable. Clear recommendation!

Great bike tour for 6 days, north west Vietnam
Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. Homesteads were great, food nothing to say as always the best. Get it booked and take your holiday to +10.

Completed the 10 Day trip. It was guided and tailored to our riding abilities. Sadly we came at a time with flooding and could not complete some tracks because of this. The food was amazing at every location. Homestays were fantastic, nice people. Ducky had good knowledge about the locations and good recommendations
