Expedition Itinerary

6 DAYS · DETAILED ROUTE
01

Day 1: Hanoi Motorbike Tour to Thac Ba Lake – Vu Linh (180 km)

Hanoi Motorbike Tour to Thac Ba Lake – Vu Linh (180 km)

Your Vietnam Big Bike Tour begins in Hanoi, where the urban hum slowly fades as you rev the engine of your ADV bike. By the time you leave the city limits, the landscape opens to endless rice fields, small villages, and the rolling foothills of northern Vietnam. Riding approximately 180 km today, you’ll experience a blend of smooth highways and winding backroads, perfect for familiarizing yourself with your big bike’s handling on Vietnam’s terrain.

As you get closer to Thac Ba Lake, the scenery becomes a stunning mosaic of emerald water, limestone islets, and ancient villages. This area is home to the Dao ethnic minority, and their traditional stilt houses line the shoreline like sentinels from another era. The ride culminates in Vu Linh village, a serene lakeside community where you’ll settle into a comfortable eco-lodge or homestay right on the water’s edge.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: This stage offers relatively easy riding compared to the mountain stages ahead. Ensure your gear is secure, drink plenty of water, and take your time adapting to Vietnam’s traffic rhythm before hitting the twistier roads of the north.

02

Day 2: Thac Ba Lake Motorcycle Tour to Ha Giang (180 km)

Thac Ba Lake Motorcycle Tour to Ha Giang (180 km)

After a quiet breakfast with mist lifting off the lake, your Vietnam ADV Bike Tour heads deeper into the frontier province of Ha Giang. This ride introduces more elevation changes, hairpin bends, and narrow passes — a prelude to the dramatic landscapes ahead.

Along the route, you’ll pass terraced rice fields clinging to mountainsides, small hamlets where children wave enthusiastically, and rivers flowing through rugged valleys. Ha Giang town, the gateway to the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, marks the end of today’s ride. You’ll check into a boutique hotel or guesthouse, enjoying a hearty local dinner and preparing for the high mountain passes of the following day.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: Keep an eye out for livestock and local traffic on blind curves. These roads are in good shape but can be narrow. A well-balanced ADV bike with good suspension will give you an edge on the mixed tarmac and gravel.

03

Day 3: Ha Giang Motorbike Tour to Meo Vac via the Dong Van Rock Plateau (150 km)

Ha Giang Motorbike Tour to Meo Vac via the Dong Van Rock Plateau (150 km)

Today is the soul of the Luxury Vietnam Big Bike Tour. After breakfast, you ride northwards, entering one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular landscapes — the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The road snakes through dramatic limestone peaks, deep canyons, and ancient Hmong villages perched on the cliffs. Every corner reveals a postcard view: terraced hillsides, winding river valleys, and sheer rock walls rising to the sky.

You’ll ride over the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass — often called Vietnam’s “King of Mountain Passes” — where the road clings to the side of a towering cliff, offering dizzying views down to the jade Nho Que River far below. Meo Vac, a charming mountain town, is your destination for the night. Here you can enjoy a warm dinner and perhaps a local corn spirit to toast the day’s epic ride.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: Ma Pi Leng Pass can be windy and narrow. Keep a steady pace and enjoy the scenery but stay alert for trucks or buses on tight corners. Make sure your camera or GoPro is ready — this is a highlight moment.

04

Day 4: Dong Van Motorbike Tour to Ban Gioc Waterfall (270 km)

Dong Van Motorbike Tour to Ban Gioc Waterfall (270 km)

Get ready for a full-on adventure today with a long ride (around 270 km) from the high mountains down to one of the most magnificent waterfalls in Asia. Leaving Meo Vac, you’ll cruise through remote valleys, endless limestone ridges, and borderland villages. The scenery gradually changes as you descend — from alpine-like cliffs to lush subtropical hills.

By late afternoon, the roar of the Ban Gioc Waterfall greets you. Straddling the Vietnam–China border, Ban Gioc is a colossal cascade tumbling over tiers of limestone into a turquoise basin. It’s a surreal sight, especially at sunset when mist and golden light create a mystical aura. You’ll overnight at a riverside lodge or comfortable guesthouse nearby, with dinner featuring local specialties.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: This is the longest and most demanding riding day. Fuel up both your tank and your body. Take breaks every 60–80 km to stretch and hydrate. Watch for changing road conditions — from mountain passes to valley roads and occasional gravel patches.

05

Day 5: Ban Gioc Waterfall Motorbike Tour to Ba Be Lake (210 km)

Ban Gioc Waterfall Motorbike Tour to Ba Be Lake (210 km)

This morning, you’ll take a few moments to admire Ban Gioc’s beauty before hitting the road again. Today’s 210-km ride takes you through rolling hills, bamboo forests, and quiet countryside on your way to Ba Be Lake National Park.

Ba Be, meaning “Three Lakes” in the local Tay language, is actually one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in Vietnam, surrounded by limestone cliffs, tropical jungle, and small ethnic villages. Once you arrive, you can take an optional boat trip on the serene waters or simply relax at your lodge/homestay on the lake’s edge.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: The ride to Ba Be is gentler than previous days, but still full of curves and occasional potholes. Adjust your suspension for more comfort and keep your riding gear breathable for the humid lowlands.

06

Day 6: Ba Be Lake Motorbike Tour to Hanoi (230 km)

Ba Be Lake Motorbike Tour to Hanoi (230 km)

Your final day of the Vietnam Big Bike Tours takes you from the peaceful Ba Be Lake back to the bustling capital. It’s a satisfying 230-km ride, blending smooth provincial highways with rustic rural roads. Along the way, you’ll pass countless rice paddies, waving farmers, and roadside cafés — the essence of Vietnam’s countryside.

Rolling back into Hanoi, you’ll feel the pulse of the city but carry with you the memories of high passes, wild waterfalls, and untouched valleys. Over a farewell dinner, you can exchange photos and stories, already plotting your next Luxury Vietnam Big Bike Tour adventure.

Tips for Big Bike Riders: As you approach Hanoi, traffic intensifies. Stay in formation, signal clearly, and anticipate city driving dynamics. This is a great time to reflect on your ride — you’ve conquered some of Vietnam’s most legendary routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the total riding distance of this 6-day big bike tour?

The entire loop covers approximately 1,220 km (758 miles) across Northern Vietnam:

  • Day 1 (Hanoi to Thac Ba Lake): 180 km

  • Day 2 (Thac Ba Lake to Ha Giang): 180 km

  • Day 3 (Ha Giang to Meo Vac via Dong Van): 150 km

  • Day 4 (Meo Vac to Ban Gioc Waterfall): 270 km

  • Day 5 (Ban Gioc Waterfall to Ba Be Lake): 210 km

  • Day 6 (Ba Be Lake to Hanoi): 230 km

2. Which motorcycle models are best suited for this itinerary?

Adventure touring (ADV) and dual-sport motorcycles with displacements between 300cc and 1250cc (such as the Honda CRF300L, CFMOTO 450MT, Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, or BMW R 1250 GS) are ideal. Their high ground clearance, long-travel suspension, and upright riding posture handle high mountain passes, gravel patches, and provincial highways with ease.

3. What riding experience level is required for this route?

This tour requires intermediate to advanced riding experience. Riders must be confident managing heavier motorcycles through steep hairpin turns, sudden elevation shifts, narrow single-lane mountain passes, and variable rural traffic.

4. Which day presents the most challenging riding conditions?

  • Technically: Day 3 presents the tightest curves, steep cliff edges, and high-altitude winds across the Dong Van Karst Plateau and Ma Pi Leng Pass.

  • Physically: Day 4 is the most demanding due to its 270 km length across remote border roads, requiring high endurance and frequent hydration stops every 60 to 80 km.

5. How difficult is it to navigate Ma Pi Leng Pass on an ADV bike?

Ma Pi Leng Pass features well-paved tarmac but includes sheer cliff drop-offs, sharp blind curves, and gusty canyon winds. ADV bikes navigate it comfortably by maintaining a disciplined gear selection, staying well within designated lanes, and yielding to oncoming local trucks and tour buses.

6. What are the road conditions across the Northern loop?

Road conditions are predominantly paved asphalt, ranging from open national highways to winding single-lane mountain roads. Riders will encounter occasional potholes, damp surfaces in shaded valleys, loose gravel near roadworks, and free-roaming livestock on village roads.

7. What accommodation standards are arranged during the trip?

Accommodations blend premium local charm with modern comforts:

  • Lakeside Eco-lodges & Homestays: Lakeside settings with private rooms at Thac Ba Lake (Vu Linh) and Ba Be National Park.

  • Boutique Hotels & Mountain Lodges: Comfortable amenities, air conditioning, and en-suite facilities in Ha Giang City, Meo Vac, and near Ban Gioc Waterfall.

8. Which ethnic minority cultures will riders encounter?

Riders pass through ancestral homelands of several ethnic groups:

  • Dao People: Known for lakeside stilt houses around Thac Ba Lake.

  • Hmong People: Inhabiting stone villages and terraced farms across Dong Van and Meo Vac.

  • Tay People: Residing in river valleys and traditional wooden homes around Ba Be Lake and Cao Bang.

9. What non-riding activities are integrated into the itinerary?

Riders can enjoy sunset sightseeing at Ban Gioc Waterfall, local culinary tastings featuring traditional corn wine and regional hill-tribe specialties, and an optional boat excursion across the freshwater karst waters of Ba Be Lake.

10. How should riders prepare for riding into and out of Hanoi?

Urban traffic in Hanoi is fast-moving and dense with scooters. Riders should maintain tight group formation, indicate lane changes well in advance, check mirrors frequently, and keep throttle inputs smooth while adapting to local traffic flow.

11. What personal riding gear is mandatory for this tour?

Essential gear includes:

  • ECE/DOT-certified full-face or modular adventure helmet

  • All-weather textile riding jacket and pants equipped with CE-rated armor

  • Sturdy adventure/enduro boots with rigid ankle support

  • Full-finger armored riding gloves

  • Breathable, moisture-wicking base layers and a heavy-duty waterproof rain suit

12. Can riders mount action cameras (GoPro/Insta360) on the bikes?

Yes. Helmet mounts, chest harnesses, and handlebar clamp mounts are highly recommended to capture the panoramic descents along the Nho Que River Canyon and the limestone peaks leading into Ban Gioc Waterfall.

13. What licenses and travel documentation are needed to ride in Vietnam?

Riders must carry a valid domestic motorcycle license alongside a 1968 Convention International Driving Permit (IDP) with the appropriate motorcycle endorsement, an original passport with a valid Vietnam visa, and comprehensive personal travel insurance covering big-displacement motorcycle riding.

14. What support and safety protocols are maintained on the road?

Every morning includes routine bike inspections (tire pressures, brake pads, and drive chains). Tours are accompanied by experienced lead guides who regulate speeds, carry field medical and mechanical tools, and orchestrate fuel stops before entering remote stretches.

15. What is the best season to ride this Northern Vietnam route?

The optimal riding seasons are autumn (September to November) for crisp skies and golden terraced rice fields, and spring (March to May) for mild temperatures and clear mountain passes.

Awesome Riding Adventure 5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful. The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Unforgettable 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon We highly recommend the 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon. The organization was excellent from start to finish. The day before, we were personally briefed by the company owner, received all important details and felt well prepared. Our guide Cong was just awesome. We felt safe at all times and were allowed to experience small cultural excursions practically every day. He showed us beautiful places, introduced us to local culture and was able to tell us an incredible amount about the country. We were also spoiled culinary – we ate very fine every day.An absolutely unique experience, perfectly organized and with a guide who made our experience unforgettable. Clear recommendation!

Great bike tour for 6 days, north west Vietnam Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. Homesteads were great, food nothing to say as always the best. Get it booked and take your holiday to +10.
