8 DAYS EXPEDITION

The Highlands Odyssey is an unforgettable Thailand ADV Big Bike Adventure that links many of the north’s most rewarding mountain roads into one complete riding experience. Beginning in Chiang Mai, the tour climbs to Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s highest mountain, before descending to the quiet riverside charm of Mae Sariang. From there, the ride follows legendary bends through Mae Hong Son and Pai, then continues to Chiang Dao’s towering limestone peaks and the cultural landmarks of Chiang Rai. The route pushes farther east to Phu Chi Fah, where mountain horizons and cloud-wrapped viewpoints create one of the most memorable stages of the journey. Nan and Phayao add historic charm and peaceful lakeside scenery, while the final return through Chae Son National Park and Mae Kampong delivers a fitting finish. This is a rich Thailand big bike touring experience built around winding mountain roads, remote countryside routes, and authentic northern landscapes.

Detailed Tour Itinerary

8 DAYS · DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE
01

Day 1 – Chiang Mai Big Bike Ride to Mae Sariang via Doi Inthanon

The tour begins in Chiang Mai with a morning departure and the first taste of northern Thailand’s celebrated mountain riding. Leaving the city behind, the route heads toward Doi Inthanon National Park, where the road begins to climb through greener landscapes and cooler mountain air. This opening day sets the tone beautifully, combining smooth tarmac, sweeping bends, and some of the most iconic scenery found on a Thailand Motorcycle Tour. It is a day that balances natural highlights with highly enjoyable on-road riding, allowing the group to settle into the rhythm of the journey.

One of the first major stops is Wachirathan Waterfall, a powerful cascade that makes an ideal break point for photos and refreshments. From there, the climb continues toward the Twin Royal Pagodas, one of Doi Inthanon’s signature attractions. Set high on Thailand’s tallest mountain, the pagodas offer wide panoramic views across the surrounding ridgelines and valleys, with beautifully landscaped gardens adding to the sense of occasion. The road around this section is particularly rewarding, with cool air, flowing corners, and scenic forest backdrops.

After the highland section, the route descends through lush woodland and sweeping mountain roads toward the south. As the terrain opens into quieter countryside, the ride gradually eases into Mae Sariang, a peaceful town beside the river with a relaxed local character. Arrival in the late afternoon gives riders time to unwind at a riverside or town-centre hotel before enjoying a calm dinner or a gentle stroll through the evening market streets.

Day 2 – Mae Sariang Adventure Ride to Pai via Mae Hong Son

Day two delivers one of the most impressive riding days of the entire journey, linking Mae Sariang to Pai through the heart of the Mae Hong Son region. This is where the route truly begins to showcase why northern Thailand is so highly regarded among international riders. The road is packed with mountain curves, changing elevations, and forested scenery, creating the kind of full-day ride that defines a premium Thailand Adventure Big Bike Tour. The route feels dynamic from the start, with long stretches of twisting tarmac that reward smooth throttle control and confident cornering.

A notable highlight along the way is Doi Mae U Kho and its famous Sunflower Viewpoint, especially striking during the late autumn bloom. When in season, the hills are covered in golden blossoms, creating a dramatic visual contrast against the surrounding mountains. Even outside the bloom period, the area remains a superb viewpoint and a memorable place to pause. Continuing north, the road flows toward Mae Hong Son town, where a cultural stop offers time to rest, refresh, and experience one of the north’s most distinctive mountain settlements. This section brings a blend of traditional atmosphere and scenic riding that feels deeply connected to the region.

The afternoon ride to Pai continues through rolling hills and forested valleys, maintaining the energy of the day while gradually shifting toward a more laid-back destination. Pai’s reputation for relaxed evenings, good food, and lively but easygoing nightlife makes it a rewarding overnight stop. After check-in at a boutique hotel or resort, riders can enjoy the markets, cafés, and music scene that give this mountain town its unique character.

03

Day 3 – Pai Scenic Mountain Route to Chiang Dao

The ride out of Pai begins with one of the best-known road sections in the country, a favorite among experienced motorcyclists for its extraordinary concentration of bends. Within the first 100 kilometers, riders tackle more than 700 curves, making this day a pure pleasure for those who appreciate technical but beautifully surfaced mountain roads. The route is a true highlight of many Northern Thailand motorcycle tours, offering a nonstop sequence of corners through forest, ridgeline scenery, and cool mountain air.

This stretch is about much more than numbers. The scenery remains consistently impressive, with steep green slopes, valleys opening below the road, and dense forest giving the route a wild and immersive quality. The changing rhythm of the road keeps the day engaging, while the broader views across the mountains remind riders that this is as much a scenic adventure as a riding challenge. It is the kind of day that leaves a strong impression because every section feels purposeful, enjoyable, and visually rewarding.

A major attraction on arrival in the Chiang Dao area is Chiang Dao Cave, one of the region’s best-known natural landmarks. The guided walk through its impressive limestone chambers adds variety to the day and provides a cultural and geological contrast to the hours spent in the saddle. By late afternoon, the tour reaches Chiang Dao, where dramatic peaks rise above rural farmland and quiet countryside. The mountain-view lodge or resort offers a calm overnight setting, perfect for a quiet dinner, a relaxed evening atmosphere, and a good rest before the next major stage of the adventure.

04

Day 4 – Chiang Dao to Chiang Rai on Northern Mountain Backroads

Day four shifts eastward and introduces a different style of riding, following lesser-known mountain roads toward Chiang Rai. Compared with the more famous loop sections of previous days, this stage feels more remote and exploratory, with technical curves, steep gradients, and wide countryside views. It is an excellent example of a Thailand adventure riding tour that goes beyond the obvious highlights, taking riders onto scenic roads that feel authentic, quiet, and richly rewarding.

The terrain changes steadily throughout the day. Forested hills give way to rolling countryside, and the more hidden nature of the route creates a strong sense of moving through northern Thailand’s less-travelled interior. Riders can expect a satisfying combination of technical sections and more open stretches, making this a varied day that appeals to those who enjoy reading the road and adapting to the land as it unfolds. The remoteness of the scenery is part of the charm, with villages, hill country, and expansive views adding texture to the ride.

By afternoon, the route reaches Chiang Rai, where the focus turns from mountain riding to cultural discovery. The city’s famous landmarks provide a memorable contrast to the day’s natural terrain. Wat Rong Khun, known worldwide as the White Temple, is a striking and imaginative interpretation of Buddhist art and architecture. The Blue Temple adds a bold visual style of its own, while the Black House, when time allows, deepens the city’s artistic identity. After the cultural tour, arrival at a central Chiang Rai hotel brings comfort and convenience, with the evening free for a visit to the night bazaar or a relaxed dinner in town.

05

Day 5 – Chiang Rai Big Bike Journey to Phu Chi Fah

The fifth day is one of the most diverse and memorable stages of the tour, combining mountain viewpoints, border-town atmosphere, major historical interest, and one of the most spectacular overnight locations in northern Thailand. Departing Chiang Rai, the route heads toward the base of the Himalayan foothills, where the roads begin to climb through elevated landscapes and broad panoramas. This section creates a strong sense of distance and discovery, showing a different face of the north from the more heavily visited riding corridors.

Among the day’s highlights is Doi Tung and the viewpoint at Pha Hi village, both of which offer exceptional mountain scenery and a strong sense of the region’s highland character. The stop near Tham Luang National Park adds another point of interest, as the area became globally known during the 2018 cave rescue. Continuing north, Mae Sai marks Thailand’s northernmost point and adds a distinct border-town atmosphere to the day. A visit to the Golden Triangle Park overlooking the Mekong further enriches the route, linking the ride to one of Southeast Asia’s most historically significant river landscapes.

The final approach to Phu Chi Fah transforms the day into something especially memorable. As the road climbs toward the mountain lodge area, the views become wider and more dramatic, and the air noticeably cooler. This stage of the Thailand big bike riding tour is as much about the destination as the ride itself. Arriving near Phu Chi Fah means spending the night high above the valleys, with the chance to enjoy an unforgettable sunset or sunrise over a sea of clouds.

06

Day 6 – Phu Chi Fah to Nan through Forest Roads and Rural Highlands After the elevated drama of Phu Chi Fah, day six continues with a quieter but deeply scenic ride toward Nan. The route begins on peaceful forest roads where the morning light and mountain air create a calm, almost meditative riding atmosphere. Long views across the hills and gentle changes in elevation make this a highly enjoyable day for riders who appreciate smooth progress through beautiful terrain. It is another strong example of a guided Thailand big bike tour designed to balance famous highlights with less obvious but equally rewarding roads. A key stop along the route is Phu Sang National Park, where waterfalls and natural surroundings provide a refreshing break from the saddle. This pause adds a softer, nature-focused moment to the day and gives riders a chance to absorb the quieter side of the region. From there, the road continues through rural landscapes marked by hillside farming villages, forest canopies, and open countryside. The pace of life in this part of northern Thailand is gentle, and the ride reflects that character, offering a flowing and immersive experience rather than a highly technical challenge. Arrival in Nan brings another shift in mood. Often considered one of the north’s most charming towns, Nan blends history, local culture, and a welcoming small-town feel. Mid-afternoon arrival allows time to settle into a riverside or town hotel before exploring the historic center on foot. The evening is ideal for enjoying local cuisine and taking in the town’s relaxed atmosphere, which makes Nan one of the most appealing cultural stops on this Thailand adventure motorcycle travel route. Day 7 – Nan to Phayao on Flowing Remote Tarmac Day seven is a pleasure for riders who enjoy quiet roads and a strong sense of space. Leaving Nan behind, the route heads through remote tarmac sections across untouched countryside, where long stretches of winding road flow through forest and rural landscapes with very little traffic. This day is less about iconic attractions and more about the pure riding experience, making it especially satisfying for those who value rhythm, smooth cornering, and the feeling of covering distance through beautiful, peaceful country. The scenery remains varied without ever becoming crowded. Forest canopies, rolling farmland, and open horizons create a steady visual backdrop, while the road itself encourages a relaxed but engaging pace. This part of the journey captures the essence of a Thailand ADV big bike adventure in a quieter form, where riders can settle into the machine, read the road naturally, and enjoy the simple pleasure of continuous movement through the countryside. The remoteness adds to the appeal, giving the day an almost private-road feel in places. By later afternoon, the route reaches Phayao, one of northern Thailand’s most underrated lakeside towns. The setting beside the water creates an immediate sense of calm after a day on rural roads, and the town offers a refreshing contrast to the mountain environments of earlier stages. A lakeside hotel provides an ideal overnight base, while the evening can be spent enjoying dinner by the water or visiting the local night market. It is a relaxed and very atmospheric end to a smooth, rewarding day of northern riding. Day 8 – Phayao to Chiang Mai via Chae Son National Park and Mae Kampong The final day of the Highlands Odyssey is a fitting conclusion, combining national park scenery, mountain roads, and one last taste of northern village culture before the return to Chiang Mai. Departing Phayao, the route turns toward Chae Son National Park, where forested roads and excellent tarmac create a rewarding morning ride. The park is well known for its geothermal hot springs, and a stop here adds a distinctive natural highlight to the final day, breaking up the ride with a chance to stretch, refresh, and enjoy the mountain surroundings. Continuing onward, the route remains scenic and enjoyable, with smooth winding roads threading through wooded hills and national park terrain. This section has a slightly more relaxed character than some of the earlier mountain days, but it still delivers enough curves and elevation changes to keep the riding highly satisfying. A stop in Mae Kampong adds one last cultural and visual highlight. The village is known for its traditional hillside layout, coffee culture, and unique architecture, making it a memorable place to pause before the final run back. Chae Son National Park The last stretch into Chiang Mai carries the familiar feeling of a journey coming full circle. After eight days of mountain riding, cultural landmarks, quiet backroads, and highland scenery, the return to the city marks the end of a richly varied Thailand Big Bike Adventure. Arrival is expected in the mid to late afternoon, with the tour concluding in Chiang Mai. For many groups, an optional celebration dinner is the perfect way to close one of the best big bike tours in Thailand and reflect on an exceptional northern riding experience. End of the trip

Awesome Riding Adventure 5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful. The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Unforgettable 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon We highly recommend the 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon. The organization was excellent from start to finish. The day before, we were personally briefed by the company owner, received all important details and felt well prepared. Our guide Cong was just awesome. We felt safe at all times and were allowed to experience small cultural excursions practically every day. He showed us beautiful places, introduced us to local culture and was able to tell us an incredible amount about the country. We were also spoiled culinary – we ate very fine every day.An absolutely unique experience, perfectly organized and with a guide who made our experience unforgettable. Clear recommendation!

Great bike tour for 6 days, north west Vietnam Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. Homesteads were great, food nothing to say as always the best. Get it booked and take your holiday to +10.
