1. Is this Ladakh motorcycle tour suitable for beginners?

It is not ideal for a complete first-time motorcyclist. Riders should already be comfortable with clutch control, braking, cornering and riding for several hours per day. Previous experience on gravel, mountain roads or adventure motorcycles is highly recommended.

2. How difficult is the ride to Umling La?

The road itself may be easier than riders imagine when conditions are good, but altitude is the real challenge. Umling La reaches 19,024 ft / 5,798 m, where physical performance is significantly reduced.

3. Do I need previous off-road riding experience?

Serious enduro experience is not required. However, confidence on broken tarmac, loose gravel, dusty roads and occasional water crossings is valuable. This is better described as a mixed-surface Himalayan adventure ride than a technical off-road expedition.

4. Which motorcycle is best for Ladakh?

An adventure motorcycle in the 350–500cc class is very suitable. Royal Enfield Himalayan models are widely used because of their riding position, suspension, torque delivery and suitability for mountain touring.

5. Can two people ride on one motorcycle?

It may be possible, but solo riding is strongly preferable for experienced motorcyclists because high altitude, luggage and rough roads can make two-up riding considerably more demanding.

6. What is the best time for a Ladakh motorcycle tour?

The main riding season normally falls between late May and September. Exact opening dates depend on snow clearance on high passes such as Rohtang, Baralacha La and Tanglang La.

5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful.The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. We did a 10 day tour. Lihn was our guide. Great guy. We had a Canadian guy join us, so 4 in total. Amazing time, 10 days few by. I had a gopro on my helmet facing forward, Lihn had one facing back.
