DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN LEH: ENTERING THE HIGH HIMALAYA
ARRIVAL IN LEH: ENTERING THE HIGH HIMALAYA
Altitude: Approx. 3,500 m / 11,500 ft
Distance: 0–20 km
Activity Time: Flexible
Road: Paved city roads only
Overnight: Leh
Riding Level: Rest / acclimatisation day
Flying into Leh is one of those rare arrivals where the landscape immediately tells you that normal rules no longer apply. The aircraft descends between enormous folds of the Himalaya before touching down in a high-altitude desert surrounded by bare mountains and snow-covered summits.
Today, however, the most important destination is not a monastery or mountain pass. It is acclimatisation.
Transfer to the hotel, meet the motorcycle team and settle into the thin air of Leh. The first hours should be deliberately slow. Hydrate regularly, enjoy a light meal and allow your body to begin adapting to the reduced oxygen level.
Ladakh Tourism currently advises visitors arriving in Leh to allow at least 48 hours for acclimatisation before travelling onward to higher-altitude destinations, especially areas such as Khardung La, Pangong and Umling La.
Later, if everyone feels completely comfortable, there may be time for a very gentle walk around Leh Market. This old trading town once connected caravan routes running between Kashmir, Tibet, Central Asia and the Indian plains. Tibetan-style architecture, prayer wheels, cafés, handicraft shops and small Buddhist shrines provide a gentle introduction to Ladakhi life.
The motorcycles will also be introduced today. Riders can check riding position, controls, luggage arrangement and protective equipment while the support team explains group riding procedures for the coming expedition.
No strenuous sightseeing should be planned. Alcohol, heavy exercise and unnecessary exertion are best avoided.
Safety Notification:
Headache, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness or disturbed sleep can be early signs of altitude illness. Riders should never conceal symptoms simply because they do not want to delay the group. High-altitude riding rewards patience, not bravado.
Tonight is about resting well. Tomorrow begins the cultural introduction to Ladakh.
