Tour Overview & Highlights

10 DAYS EXPEDITION

A 10-day offroad motorcycle tour through Northern Vietnam that feels like riding inside a documentary—raw, scenic, and deeply human. Starting from Hanoi, we climb to Ta Xua for cloud-hunting viewpoints, then chase the legendary rice terraces of Mu Cang Chai before cooling down in the misty peaks of Sapa. From there, the journey turns cultural in Bac Ha, where highland life and ethnic traditions remain beautifully authentic. The adventure intensifies as we enter Ha Giang’s UNESCO karst plateau, carving through steep passes, sharp curves, and the iconic Ma Pi Leng Pass—an EPIC RIDE above the Nho Que gorge. We continue into Cao Bang’s quiet backcountry to witness the power of Ban Gioc Waterfall, then slow the pace with a peaceful boat trip on Ba Be Lake, surrounded by jungle-clad limestone cliffs. Expect a thrilling mix of winding roads, dirt tracks, and unforgettable local encounters—Vietnam at its wildest and finest.

10 DAYS · DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE
01

Day 1: Hanoi Motorbike Tour to Ta Xua (First Climb, First Clouds)

Leaving Hanoi in the early morning, we slip out of the city before the traffic fully wakes up. The road gradually softens into countryside—rice paddies, river bends, and small towns where morning markets spill onto the sidewalks. This is a warm-up day, but don’t be fooled: Northern Vietnam likes to introduce itself gently, then suddenly—without warning—pulls you into a world of sharp curves and rising mountain air.

As we approach Moc Chau and the Son La highlands, the temperature cools and the horizon starts to roll. The ride becomes an adventure ride of twisting lanes, tea hills, and quiet forest corridors. Depending on the season, there may be short muddy roads or broken patches near village lanes—nothing extreme, but enough to remind you that this is not a showroom tour; it’s a real offroad motorcycle tour experience.

By afternoon, Ta Xua appears like a hidden balcony above the clouds. This remote mountain area is famous for its “sea of clouds” mornings and the iconic ridge locals call the “dinosaur spine”—a narrow crest with dramatic drop-offs and panoramic views. If time allows, we’ll take a short hike or a light trail ride to a viewpoint, watching the sun fall behind layered mountain silhouettes.

Tonight is simple, warm, and authentic: a local guesthouse, a hearty home-cooked meal, and that quiet excitement riders feel on the first night—when you realize the journey has truly begun.

Estimated distance/time: ~220–260 km | 6–7.5 hours
Highlights: highland roads, Ta Xua cloud viewpoints, remote village atmosphere
Overnight: Ta Xua

Off-road to Ta Xua Peak
02

Day 2: Ta Xua Motorbike Tour to Mu Cang Chai (Wild Tracks into Terrace Country)

Ta Xua mornings are special—mist floating through valleys, roosters calling from far-off houses, and the smell of wood smoke curling from kitchen fires. If the weather is kind, we’ll catch the famous cloud ocean before the ride begins. Then we turn our bikes toward Vietnam’s legendary terrace kingdom: Mu Cang Chai.

This day often feels like the first true “big ride.” The road is a ribbon of twisted or winding roads, constantly changing character: smooth tarmac turns into rougher sections; wide views collapse into tight mountain corridors; and every pass opens a new landscape. Riders love this stage because it’s technical enough to stay exciting—steep passes, sharp curves, and occasional dirt tracks linking small hamlets.

We roll through ethnic minority areas where H’Mong and Thai communities live close to the land. You’ll see traditional wooden houses, corn drying on fences, and children waving as we pass. Stops along the way aren’t just photo breaks—they’re small cultural windows. A cup of green tea at a roadside stall, a quick chat with locals, a view of terraced fields stacked like stairways to the sky.

Arriving in Mu Cang Chai feels like reaching a masterpiece. This area is famous for its rice terraces—especially around La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh—some of the most iconic in Southeast Asia. At sunset, the terraces catch light like hammered gold, and you’ll understand why photographers travel from around the world for this moment.

Estimated distance/time: ~170–220 km | 6–7.5 hours
Highlights: mountain passes, minority villages, Mu Cang Chai terraces
Overnight: Mu Cang Chai

03

Day 3: Mu Cang Chai Motorbike Tour to Sapa (Epic Ride Over High Passes)

Today is what riders call an EPIC RIDE—a day where the road, the altitude, and the atmosphere combine into something unforgettable. We leave Mu Cang Chai with terraces behind us and aim toward the peaks that guard Sapa. The route climbs and dips through valleys and ridgelines, with long stretches of winding roads that feel designed for motorcycles.

As we approach the Hoang Lien Son range, you’ll notice the air thinning and cooling. The mountains here are bolder, more dramatic—like Vietnam decided to show you its wildest face. Depending on the exact route and weather, we may cross high viewpoints with fast-changing fog, where visibility shifts in seconds—beautiful and demanding, the way real adventure riding should be.

Sapa itself is a mountain town shaped by ethnic cultures—H’Mong, Dao, Tay—and by the French colonial era, which left subtle traces in architecture and town planning. If time allows after arrival, we can take a gentle loop toward Lao Chai or Ta Van valleys for a taste of local life: terraced fields, stone fences, indigo-dyed textiles, and that quiet strength mountain communities carry.

This evening, Sapa offers comfort after the intensity of the road—warm meals, a hot shower, and the chance to walk the town in cool mist. Riders often sleep deeply here; the body feels satisfied when it has earned a destination.

Estimated distance/time: ~160–210 km | 5.5–7 hours
Highlights: high mountain roads, Hoang Lien Son scenery, Sapa ethnic valleys
Overnight: Sapa

Sapa Motorbike Tour
04

Day 4: Sapa Motorbike Tour to Bac Ha (Markets, Minority Culture & Backroads)

We leave Sapa behind on backroads that quickly become quieter and more personal. Today is less about altitude drama and more about culture—Bac Ha is famous as a highland trading hub where minority groups meet, exchange goods, and keep traditions alive through everyday life.

The ride is a mix of flowing tarmac and rougher rural lanes. Some segments can feel like single trails in spirit—narrow, intimate, sometimes patched, sometimes dusty. In wet season, village entrances may turn into short muddy roads; in dry season, you’ll taste the red-brown dust that riders secretly love because it proves the road was real.

Bac Ha’s identity is strongly linked to the Flower H’Mong and other highland groups. If the timing matches a market day, this becomes a highlight of the whole tour: indigo fabrics, embroidered clothing, handmade tools, horses, buffalo, and the sounds of bargaining that feel like a living museum—except it’s not staged, it’s real.

Even on non-market days, Bac Ha is still special. We can visit a local village, see traditional homes, and learn about highland agriculture—corn, plum orchards, and hardy crops that survive the mountain climate. It’s a day that often surprises guests: less famous than Sapa, but more authentic in many ways.

Tonight in Bac Ha is calm, local, and soulful—perfect preparation for the bigger frontier rides toward Ha Giang.

Estimated distance/time: ~120–170 km | 4.5–6 hours
Highlights: highland backroads, minority culture, Bac Ha market life (if applicable)
Overnight: Bac Ha

05

Day 5: Bac Ha Motorbike Tour to Ha Giang (Entering the Frontier)

Today we ride into Ha Giang province—the name alone makes experienced riders smile. The landscape becomes more rugged, more remote, and the roads begin to feel like a gateway to Vietnam’s last frontier. Leaving Bac Ha, we follow winding routes through river valleys and mountain folds, where villages appear like small islands in a sea of green.

This day is a true adventure ride—long enough to feel like a journey, varied enough to stay exciting. Expect sharp curves and constant elevation changes. The scenery shifts from cultivated hills into deeper mountain terrain, and every stop becomes a discovery: a roadside tea stand, a suspension bridge, a viewpoint where the valley stretches endlessly.

Ha Giang’s cultural richness is one of the greatest in Vietnam. Dozens of ethnic groups live here, each with distinct traditions, language, and clothing. You’ll feel this diversity in the architecture, the markets, and the way local life is organized around mountains rather than cities.

Arriving in Ha Giang town, you can already sense the loop ahead—Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, Cao Bang. The town itself is simple, functional, and welcoming—an adventure base rather than a tourist show. Tonight is about preparation: bike check, route briefing, and that quiet anticipation before the legendary days to come.

Estimated distance/time: ~240–320 km | 7–9 hours
Highlights: frontier landscapes, ethnic diversity, long-distance ride satisfaction
Overnight: Ha Giang

Bac Ha Motorcycle Tours to Ha Giang City
06

Day 6: Ha Giang Motorbike Tour to Dong Van (Steep Passes & Stone Plateau)

This is where Ha Giang starts to reveal its mythology. We leave the town early and climb into the Dong Van Karst Plateau, a UNESCO-recognized geopark known for dramatic limestone formations, deep canyons, and a landscape that looks almost otherworldly.

The road becomes more technical—steep passes, sharp curves, and twisted roads carved into mountainsides. You’ll feel the bike working beneath you, and you’ll love it. Stops along the way might include viewpoints, small ethnic villages, and local markets where daily life continues exactly as it has for generations.

Dong Van town feels like a frontier outpost. Old stone houses, narrow streets, and a quiet atmosphere make it a perfect overnight stop. If it’s weekend, the old quarter and market atmosphere can be lively; if not, it’s calm and reflective. Either way, Dong Van is the gateway to one of the greatest rides in Southeast Asia: Ma Pi Leng.

Estimated distance/time: ~140–170 km | 5–6.5 hours
Highlights: Dong Van Karst Plateau, geopark scenery, technical mountain riding
Overnight: Dong Van

07

Day 7: Dong Van → Bao Lac via Ma Pi Leng Pass & Meo Vac (The Legendary Cliff Ride)

If there is one day riders talk about for years, it’s this one. We leave Dong Van and head straight into the heart of Ha Giang’s legend: Ma Pi Leng Pass. The road clings to cliffs above the Nho Que River gorge, twisting like a dragon’s spine. This is an EPIC RIDE in every sense—jaw-dropping views, intense sharp curves, and that adrenaline-fueled focus that makes you feel completely alive.

We’ll stop at the famous viewpoint where the gorge opens below like a giant crack in the earth. The Nho Que River looks unreal—emerald ribbon far beneath the cliffs. If time and conditions allow, there may be an optional descent toward the river area (route-dependent), but even from above, the scenery is mind-blowing.

After Meo Vac, the ride transitions toward Cao Bang’s mountainous backcountry. Roads become quieter again, with a mix of pavement and rougher rural stretches—sometimes wild tracks in spirit. Bao Lac is a small mountain town, less touristy, more authentic, and perfect for resting after the emotional intensity of Ma Pi Leng.

Tonight, you’ll feel the day in your body—tired arms, happy heart, and a camera full of memories that still won’t capture what you saw with your own eyes.

Estimated distance/time: ~150–190 km | 6–7.5 hours
Highlights: Ma Pi Leng Pass, Nho Que gorge views, Meo Vac frontier culture
Overnight: Bao Lac

River crossing by bambo raft from Dong Van to Bao Lac
08

Day 8: Bao Lac → Ban Gioc Waterfall (Deep Mountains to Iconic Border Scenery)

Today’s ride pushes deeper into Cao Bang province—one of Vietnam’s most scenic and least crowded regions. The mountains here feel greener and more secretive, and the roads roll through valleys where rivers shimmer and villages sit quietly beneath limestone peaks.

This is a day for riders who enjoy rhythm: steady corners, occasional rough patches, and long stretches of pure nature. Some side sections can be dirt tracks depending on route choice; in rainy periods, expect short muddy roads near villages or construction zones. Nothing is “hard enduro,” but it’s real-world adventure riding—exactly what an offroad motorcycle tour should taste like.

By afternoon, the grand finale appears: Ban Gioc Waterfall, Vietnam’s most famous border waterfall, shared with China across the Quay Son River. The scene is cinematic—multiple tiers of white water pouring through green cliffs, with rice fields and karst mountains framing the background. You’ll understand instantly why this place is on every northern Vietnam dream list.

Depending on timing, we can walk to viewpoints, take photos from the riverbank, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as day visitors fade away. Overnight near Ban Gioc is magical because the evening becomes quiet; the waterfall’s sound feels like nature’s lullaby.

Estimated distance/time: ~170–230 km | 6–7.5 hours
Highlights: Cao Bang backcountry, karst valleys, Ban Gioc Waterfall
Overnight: Ban Gioc area

Ban Gioc Waterfall
09

Day 9: Ban Gioc → Ba Be Lake + Boat Trip (From Waterfall Power to Jungle Calm)

We start the morning with fresh air and one last look at Ban Gioc, then ride toward Ba Be—one of Vietnam’s most serene natural landscapes. The route winds through remote countryside and limestone terrain, with plenty of moments where you feel completely off the tourist map.

As we approach Ba Be National Park, the environment changes into greener, denser forests—jungle vibes, hidden rivers, and quiet village roads. If the weather has been wet, you might encounter small slippery sections—short muddy roads near forest edges—but the reward is worth it: Ba Be is a sanctuary.

In the afternoon, we swap the engine’s roar for the gentle hush of water. A boat trip on Ba Be Lake is the perfect contrast to nine days of riding. The lake is framed by limestone cliffs and thick forest, and the water reflects the sky like glass. Depending on the boat route, you may pass river caves, small waterfalls, and stilt-house villages of the Tay people—one of the most hospitable communities in northern Vietnam.

Tonight’s homestay or lakeside lodge is often a favorite memory. After dinner, the air is cool, the stars are bright, and the world feels wonderfully far away.

Estimated distance/time: ~210–260 km | 6.5–8 hours + boat time
Highlights: remote karst roads, Ba Be National Park, boat cruise & Tay culture
Overnight: Ba Be Lake

Boat Trip on Ba Be lake
10

Day 10: Ba Be Lake Motorbike Tour to Hanoi (Final Ride, Big Return)

The last day begins gently. Ba Be mornings are quiet and clean—mist rising off the water, locals heading to fields, and the steady calm that only nature reserves hold. We ride out of the park on scenic rural roads, then gradually move toward more developed areas.

This return day is designed to be safe and steady, but still beautiful. We’ll keep stops flexible—coffee breaks, viewpoints, and a final local lunch where riders usually start recounting the highlights: Ta Xua clouds, Mu Cang Chai terraces, Sapa mountain air, Bac Ha culture, Ha Giang’s stone kingdom, Ma Pi Leng’s jaw-dropping cliffs, Ban Gioc’s power, and Ba Be’s peace.

As Hanoi appears, the traffic energy returns, but you return different—more confident, more connected, and with a deep respect for the geography and spirit of northern Vietnam. This isn’t just a route; it’s a story ridden through mountains, cultures, and wild landscapes.

Estimated distance/time: ~230–260 km | 6–7.5 hours
Highlights: countryside farewell, final scenic stops, Hanoi finish
End point: Hanoi

Awesome Riding Adventure 5 of us did the 10 day Northern Vietnam Off-road Loop at the end of November, very ably assisted by by our guide, Giang, and support vehicle driver, Dong.We logged over 1800km in 9 days of riding, saw some absolutely amazing scenery, partook in local delicacies, met and partied with ethnic people and had an epic trip.Everything around the trip was managed efficiently by Mike Dong, including organising Vietnamese drivers licences for us all. The bikes we had (CRF300L) performed well with only two flat tyres to speak of. The accommodation choices (apart from one night) were comfortable and adequate, the meals were delicious and plentiful. The whole trip went like clockwork and we got to see places few other tourist would ever get to see.I would definitely recommend this tour or shorter trips if you feel 10 days is a bit much.

Unforgettable 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon We highly recommend the 12-day trip from Hanoi to Saigon. The organization was excellent from start to finish. The day before, we were personally briefed by the company owner, received all important details and felt well prepared. Our guide Cong was just awesome. We felt safe at all times and were allowed to experience small cultural excursions practically every day. He showed us beautiful places, introduced us to local culture and was able to tell us an incredible amount about the country. We were also spoiled culinary – we ate very fine every day.An absolutely unique experience, perfectly organized and with a guide who made our experience unforgettable. Clear recommendation!

Great bike tour for 6 days, north west Vietnam Brilliant 6 days, the tours are road based with a little bit of riding on un paved roads, Ducky was our guide, ex-road racer which suited us as we like to push on. Was amazing to see all the villagers, people waving, nothing like miserable old England where everyone thinks your doing something illegal. Homesteads were great, food nothing to say as always the best. Get it booked and take your holiday to +10.
